Cornerstone
Sculpture
Original stone of Marchmont Estate Bridge, 50 pence coin from 2024, exhibition texts.
Exhibited at The Hugo Burge Foundation, Old Squash Court, 2024.
The cornerstone is the first stone in a construction laid down by the mason. Traditionally, these stones were hollowed and filled with all archival material relating to the build, including measurements, drawings and the information about those involved. A coin of the year was often inset into the cornerstone to evidence time of the build. This hand chiselled cornerstone, is an original piece of the old Marchmont Bridge complete with 50 pence from 2024 and containing a stack of free-to-take exhibition texts detailing the initial foundational research behind the project.
